What is the Intercultural Competency Scholarship?
Mars Hill Graduate School is committed to an ongoing effort toward developing intercultural competency and promoting ethnic and racial reconciliation within the MHGS Community and beyond, and believe such labor to be essential to its mission and living into the global reality of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ. Toward this end, the office of Organization Development is pleased to offer the Intercultural Competency Scholarship as one way to invite and recognize the leadership, participation, and voice of MHGS students from traditionally underrepresented race and ethnic populations.
The recipient of this scholarship will gain valuable resume-building experience and receive weekly training, resourcing and support while assisting and participating in the real-time efforts of MHGS as it seeks to develop intercultural competency both institutionally and programmatically. The scholarship requires a 12-month commitment (mid-July to mid-July) of 10 hours per week. See below for more information on the terms of this scholarship.
This scholarship is intended for returning MHGS students from traditionally underrepresented race/ethnic populations. Applicants must have successfully completed their first year at MHGS (15 credits earned), including the successful completion of Multicultural Issues/Social & Cultural Foundations Class, with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Structure
Recipients will fulfill the terms of the of Intercultural Competency Scholarship as outlined below and will be supervised by the Director of Organization Development to ensure they receive adequate support and resourcing for enhanced growth opportunities.
Recipients will commit to working at least 10 hours per week, including 2 hours in weekly student leadership meetings. These hours may include weekends.
Recipients will participate in student leadership (within Anamchara) and attend weekly student leadership meetings, assist in the creation and facilitation of an Intercultural Competency Resource Team at MHGS and associated projects, and facilitate multicultural dinners and similar activities.
2010-2011 Scholarship Terms
With the exception of the federal financial aid, the MHGS Intercultural Competency Scholarship is not combinable with any other institutional scholarships.
Recipients who drop below full time status or withdraw from active enrollment may bear responsibility for full repayment of all tuition assistance funds paid for the trimester.
Students who are not selected to receive the award may compete in subsequent years, but no student is guaranteed to receive the award more than once.
The rules and regulations governing other sources of financial aid (federal, state, institutional and other grants, gifts or loans) will apply.
Eligibility Criteria
Student who meet the following criteria are invited to apply:
- Returning MHGS students from traditionally underrepresented race/ethnic populations attending fall 2010-2011. Applicants must have successfully completed their first year at MHGS (14 credits earned), including the successful completion of Multicultural Issues/Social & Cultural Foundations Class, with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
- Must be intending to enroll in a degree program full-time (at least 7 credits not including audit or enrichment).
- Completed the Free Application For Student Aid (FAFSA).
Application Process
Each applicant must fill out an application and be interviewed by the Director of Organization Development and department representative. Completed applications are due by May 24, 2010.
Applications will include
- The Intercultural Competency Scholarship application form
- A copy of the Identity Development paper turned in for Multicultural Issues/Social and Cultural Foundations Class. The copy need not include grade or professor comments.
- One essay (no more than 300 words please) addressing the following: Describe how your beliefs and personal commitment toward equity and social justice influence your desire to assume this leadership position within MHGS.
Qualified applicants will be contacted and interviews will be conducted between May 24th and June 2nd. Notifications will occur June 5th.
