Writing Tutor Referrals

Writing tutors are recommended by faculty members and TAs. Each tutor maintains at least a 3.5 GPA and has been identified as having excellent writing skills. Tutors are not employed by Mars Hill Graduate School, and so each student who utilizes tutoring is responsible for paying tutors at the time of service.

To arrange tutoring, students should
1. Email the Registrar for a list of recommended tutors.
2. Choose a tutor whose expertise fits your needs.
3. Contact the tutor to arrange a time & place to meet.
4. Pay the tutor the established fee—$20/hour—at the time of service.
5. Make further appointments as necessary with the tutor.

Writing tutors are available to
• Offer help in brainstorming and planning of papers;
• Assist students in understanding assignments and getting started;
• Identify and help troubleshoot organizational and content issues in students'
   papers;
• Identify and help students learn from grammatical and mechanical errors;
• Identify places and directions for further development; and
• Assist in general writing improvement: clarity, structure, cohesiveness.

MHGS-recommended writing tutors will not edit or proofread papers; their role is to supplement and support the learning process through feedback and conversations about writing. The student alone—not the tutor—is responsible for the grades or comments received on assignments.

Students who utilize MHGS-recommended writing tutors may be asked to complete a Tutoring Program evaluation at the end of each term.
